Hoodia (Hoodia gordonii) is a flowering succulent native to South Africa. Not technically a cactus, it is often referred to as a “cactiform” due to its uncanny resemblance to the the cactus family. Hoodia has upward-growing green stems and large, fragrant flowers that are typically tan or pink.

In 1937, a Dutch anthropologist studied the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert, who were using hoodia to suppress hunger and thirst during long hunting trips. Hoodia has since become a popular supplement to promote a balanced appetite.
