Kava (Piper methysticum), or “kava kava,” is a tropical plant native to the islands of the South Pacific, where the roots are used as a traditional ceremonial drink. “Piper” is Latin for “pepper,” a relative of kava, and “methysticum” in Latinized Greek means “intoxicating.” The kava root in this formula is selectively imported from the South Pacific island of Vanuatu.
Kava is noted for its ability to promote deep physical and mental relaxation, elevated mood and a sense of contentment without sacrificing mental clarity. The active chemical compounds in kava are called kavalactones.
