Marshmallow (Althea officinalis) is a flowering perennial native to Europe and western Asia.  Its thick roots are pale-gold in color and filled with a viscous substance called mucilage. Popular in traditional Greek medicine, “Althea” is derived from the Greek word “altho,” meaning “to cure.”The ancient Greek poem The Iliad, referenced this healing herb over 2,000 years ago.

Marshmallow root may display anti-inflammatory activity and acts as a demulcent, soothing and cooling mucous membranes by forming a thick, protective coating (mucilage).
Popular for pain, swelling and inflammation of the respiratory tract, its mucilage quality is useful for calming dry coughs and irritation. In ancient Egypt, the root was sweetened with honey and used to treat sore throats.

Marshmallow root is a popular herb for gastric inflammation, and is commonly used to promote relief from heartburn, indigestion, colitis and ulcers. Its “slippery” quality also promotes constipation relief.

Soothing for the skin, marshmallow root is often included in creams, lotions and salves. It’s said to promote would healing and has been used externally for burns, sprains and bruises.
