Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering herb native to the Mediterranean. Its name references the milk-like sap that seeps from the leaves when they are crushed. Other names include Mary thistle, lady thistle, Marian thistle and holy thistle.
The active constituent in milk thistle is silymarin, extracted from the seeds. Silymarin may display anti-inflammatory activity and acts as a powerful antioxidant, fighting cellular damage from free radicals.
